It was not until very recently that I discovered the benefits of Sourdough bread! Most people think "gut healthy" but not so much "brain healthy."


Here are some of the benefits ✨


1. Enhanced Digestibility and Nutrient Absorption

The fermentation process in sourdough helps break down gluten and phytic acid, making the bread easier to digest and allowing for better absorption of nutrients like magnesium, zinc, and B vitamins. Magnesium and B vitamins, especially, play crucial roles in cognitive health, mood regulation, and energy levels.


2. Rich in Prebiotics and Probiotics

The lactic acid bacteria in sourdough act as prebiotics, feeding beneficial gut bacteria that produce neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. These gut-produced neurotransmitters have a direct impact on brain health, mood, and emotional regulation.


3. Low Glycemic Index (GI)

Sourdough bread generally has a lower glycemic index than regular bread. Lower GI foods help stabilize blood sugar levels, preventing spikes and crashes that can affect concentration, energy, and mood.

8. May Help Improve Sleep

The magnesium content in sourdough can contribute to better sleep quality, as magnesium supports relaxation and reduces cortisol, the stress hormone. Good sleep is essential for cognitive function, memory, and emotional regulation.
